When it comes to Twitter, the real power of influence is in those who Retweet you

Sunday, 22 November, 2009

If you think the power of Twitter exists to spread your message to your 50,000 followers you may want to ReTwink that. The reality is that the “authority” one has with their group of followers is much more impacting than their direct reach.

The video below provides a great definition, but in summary one might think about it like this.

Your really impressive and important message is sent to your Twitter network. You reach some of those many people who are paying attention right now. But some of those people retweet your message thereby sharing it with those who they influence. This not only spreads your message, but it also attracts others of like mind to follow you and establishes you as an authority on the subject – at least a possible authority.

Well, take a look and leave me a comment, what do you think of the new broadcast media that is Twitter?

Idaho based search engine marketing firm – Seybold Scientific

Idaho search engine marketing firm Seybold Scientific offers professional, results oriented search engine marketing services for small to mid size businesses.

Our search engine marketing services fall into two broad categories:

For storefront businesses and companies that target local or regional clientele, we offer our local search marketing services.

why search engine marketing services?

Dollar for dollar, search engines provide the most economical and best targeted leads for your business – beyond any other marketing medium.

A professionally managed search engine marketing program is essential to your web site’s success. Unlike other marketing channels, traffic from search engines can be well targeted and tracked; providing you with proof of return, and analytics to guide your ongoing search marketing decisions.

Shifting Search Marketing Strategy

Tuesday, 3 November, 2009

Today I got my Google Wave invite and floundered around there for a bit. Last week I played around with Google’s new Social Search experiment. With all the new uses, integrations and features search engines are adding to their results, it’s enough to make a marketer dizzy.

Is anyone else left asking, “What’s next?”

Along with the changes to search, the online evolution has brought about a change in user behavior. Turns out that after a rough year of economic uncertainty, Internet users are keeping their eyes wide open to identify scams as well as sales pitches.

Spending any time on the Internet’s watering holes, social networks, reveals that seemingly innocuous games and messages from trusted friends can elevate your participation to victim status with the click of a link.

Some users may have extended their caution of online content to the realm of the marketer as well. At last week’s Digital Publishing & Advertising Conference (DPAC4) attendees learned that consumers have new-found pride in their ability to bypass marketing messages. As if it weren’t hard enough for a business online, now the audience is actively trying to tune out the message.

Despite the great abuse potential of social media content to harm brands or defame individuals, on the search side, we see the engines eager to integrate social media into main results.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has made it clear that he thinks social media and real-time content plays heavily in the future for search. Determining how to rank real-time social media content is, according to Schmidt, “the great challenge of the age.”

Faced with an mistrustful audience and a new search opportunity, social media is a crucial frontier for any online business to be on. Thought it’s worth considering just where the value of real-time participation lies.

For all the weight put on real-time content within search engines and all the time spent on online social networks, for all the new features being added to search and the lack of trust Internet users have for overt marketing…

As recently as last week, I heard said that SMM wasn’t a requirement of SEO. Faced with some new information you should actually reconsider whether social media marketing has in fact become a vital requirement of search engine optimization. I mean, really… what’s next?

Twitter Me This

Wednesday, 19 August, 2009

Occasionally we get asked by our clients about the ins and outs of integrating Social Network features they see on their websites.  Often times you will find it for occasions, such as, Tell everyone about this special offer on Twitter and be entered in our drawing for this prize.

If it is your goal to have someone Twitter your daily specials, then it is quite possible to add a link that says:  “Order today’s special @AlsDiner and 4 eat for the price of 1 when you tweet this: click here for more details http://bit.ly/XxXxx”

So how is it done?  It is as simple as creating a custom link for each specific message:

http://twitter.com/home?status=your custom tweet

Using the example above, your link will look like this:

http://twitter.com/home?status=Order today’s special @AlsDiner and 4 eat for the price of 1 when you tweet this: click here for more details http://bit.ly/XxXxx

Google Algorithm Changes In October 2009

Friday, 14 August, 2009

The Google search algorithm will be changing once again in October. The new change is being forced by the shifting focus of consumers using social networking sites to learn and search about topics of interest. Google in reaction to Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine has decided to continue to focus on relevance of topic and time-sensitivity. The more up-to-date information is the more relevant it is and through social networks information is being posted much quicker in real time.

As a business owner the significance of the algorithm changes signifies that if your company does not have the proper components it will not get ranked highly within search results. Imagine the impact to your business if you were able to have your company listed at the top of popular search term within your industry. That would require less out bound marketing and increase sales which will improve your overall profitability as you don’t have to spend money on acquiring new clients consistently.

We understand how Google is looking at the social networks to rank sites and understand the importance of your company being present in the social networks. If your website does not have rich links within sites such as Digg, Stumbleupon, Delicious, Squidoo, etc. than perhaps you should look at re-investing your marketing dollars there. Recognizing that most businesses don’t understand social networks we have conveniently launched a kick-start package at an incredible $750 to help your business get placed in these social networks. In this package you get 20 written items to be placed throughout the World Wide Web. When these written topics get published online they will be picked up and help you build credibility to your website in the ‘eyes’ of Google.

This incredible promotion is valued at $1250 and we are offering this incentive as we too understand that times are not the best and the important of initiating this campaign.

Kick Start Package $750

  1. 15 blog comments
  2. 1 SEO press release
  3. 2 syndicated articles
  4. 2 blog posts (or 2 articles if no blog)

Coca Cola Using Social Media – A Case Study

Thursday, 6 August, 2009

This is a great video that talks about how Coca Cola is using social media to respond to customers and grow brand loyalty.

Jonathan Mildenhall, Coca-Cola’s VP of global advertising strategy, admitted the multi-national corporation had been slow to embrace social media and historically, they did make some mistakes. However, if you scratch the surface a little, they’re doing some interesting things.

In April they created a new office of digital communications and social media within its public affairs and communications department, giving Adam Brown, digital communications director, and Anne Carelli, digital communications manager, oversight of corporate digital and social media communications efforts.

It’s worth watching Adam speak about Coca-Cola’s social media strategy at the recent BlogWell New York conference (start 50 secs in).

On a side note, kudos to Andy Sernovitz and his company Gaspedal for truly moving social media into the main stream through events like this.

How do I get a video off of my iPhone 3GS?

Tuesday, 4 August, 2009

One of the great new features of the iPhone 3GS is its improved camera lens, and most importantly the fact that it can record videos. After shooting and trimming a video, you can easily upload this video to YouTube, or even email it to a friend. But what if you simply want to import this video to your computer?

There is an easy way to copy a video recorded with your iPhone 3GS to your computer.

If you’re on a PC, go to My Computer and look for “Scanners and Camera”. You should see your iPhone there. Double-click on it and and save your photos and videos to the desired location.

If you’re on a Mac, open the Image Capture app. It will recognize both pictures and videos recorded with your iPhone. Drag and drop the video where you want to save it and that’s it.

What is cloud computing?

Life before cloud computing

Traditional business applications—like those from SAP, Microsoft, and Oracle—have always been too complicated and expensive. They need a data center with office space, power, cooling, bandwidth, networks, servers, and storage. A complicated software stack. And a team of experts to install, configure, and run them. They need development, testing, staging, production, and failover environments.

When you multiply these headaches across dozens or hundreds of apps, it’s easy to see why the biggest companies with the best IT departments aren’t getting the apps they need. Small businesses don’t stand a chance.

Cloud-computing: a better way

Cloud computing is a better way to run your business. Instead of running your apps yourself, they run on a shared data center. When you use any app that runs in the cloud, you just log in, customize it, and start using it. That’s the power of cloud computing.

Businesses are running all kinds of apps in the cloud these days, like CRM, HR, accounting, and custom-built apps. Cloud-based apps can be up and running in a few days, which is unheard of with traditional business software. They cost less, because you don’t need to need to pay for all the people, products, and facilities to run them. And, it turns out they’re more scalable, more secure, and more reliable than most apps. Plus, upgrades are taken care of for you, so your apps get security and performance enhancements and new features—automatically.

The way you pay for cloud-based apps is also different. Forget about buying servers and software. When your apps run in the cloud, you don’t buy anything. It’s all rolled up into a predictable monthly subscription, so you only pay for what you actually use.

Finally, cloud apps don’t eat up your valuable IT resources, so your CFO will love it. This lets you focus on deploying more apps, new projects, and innovation.

The bottom line: Cloud computing is a simple idea, but it can have a huge impact on your business – even if you are a small business.
